Peggie Jeane Alice Wilson Rake
Peggie Jeane Alice Wilson Rake was born on July 7, 1923 in Vernon, Texas to Carrie Eggleston Wilson and Duard Wilson, Sr. She passed through the gates of Heaven on Sept.22, 2015 at the age of 92 years at home.
Except for the last five years when she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in the San Antonio area, Peggie was a resident of Vernon. She attended local schools and graduated from Vernon High School in 1941. After receiving her cosmetology diploma in 1959, she began a 35-year career as a stylist in Vernon. She thoroughly enjoyed her clients and counted them as her special friends.
Peggie loved to travel and experience new adventures. She had visited most of the 50 states, including two trips to Alaska to see her great-grandson and one tour of Hawaii. Her favorite journey was visiting eight European countries in 1972 with her daughter and son-in-law. Peggie had a profound appreciation for anything beautiful…whether it was a painting, a cloud formation, a mountain or a piece of jewelry.
Service also characterized her life. Whether it was volunteering as a room mother at Hawkins Elementary School, a Blue Bird leader or a teacher of 2-year old children at First Baptist Church, she loved helping others. Later in her life, Peggie was the primary care-giver for her Mother, aunt, and a brother. Preceding Mrs. Rake in death were her parents and her brothers, Duard Wilson, Jr. and Warren E. Wilson and numerous other relatives and cherished friends.
Peggie loved people and had numerous friends of various ages. She touched many lives with her kindness and “common sense” approach to life. Through her virtues of devotion and service to her family and friends, Peggie Wilson Rake has provided a legacy to her family for living a meaningful life, remaining forever in the memory of those who knew and loved her. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Bob Abernathy of Converse; two granddaughters, Carrie Vitori and husband David of Amelia Island, Fla. and Amy Adams and husband Greg of Royse City, TX. Great-grandchildren include Garrett and Kate Vitori and Ashley and Ava Adams. One cousin and several nieces and nephews also survive Peggie.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at Sullivan Funeral Home. A memorial service to honor Peggie Wilson Rake will be held at 2 p.m. in the Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Vernon, TX and to Carnegie City-County Library.
