Holy Week activities planned

The  Holy Week activities in Vernon include the traditional Men’s Breakfasts hosted by the various churches and held at 7 a.m., each morning with all men invited to attend.
The breakfasts will begin on Monday, April 15, 2019, at the Wilbarger Street Church of Christ; Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at First United Methodist Church; on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at the Second Baptist Church; Thursday, April 18, at First Presbyterian Church, and conclude on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the First Baptist Church.
Other events scheduled by individual churches and groups during Holy Week as churches prepare for include Easter include:
A Good Friday service will be held at 6 p.m., on Friday, April 19. 2019 at Faith United Methodist Church. A Good Friday service at sunset on Friday, April 19, 2019 hosted by First United Methodist Church will be held on the Tim Schur farm north of Vernon,9501 CR 124, and a sunrise service on Easter Sunday will also be held at 7 a.m., at the Schur farm. These services will be outside so those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair, There will be one morning service on Palm Sunday at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church sanctuary featuring the children waving palms, the Chancel Choir and the First Praise Band. An Easter “Egg”stavaganza will be held on Wednesday, April 17, at the church with the Easter egg hunt at 5:30 p.m. for infants through fifth grade.
On Good Friday, First Presbyterian Church’s sanctuary will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for prayer and meditation. First Presbyterian will hold an Easter sunrise service at 6:45 a.m. at Patrick and Diane More’s home 8056 Hwy 70. This will be outside so those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair. If it should rain the service will be held in Staub Hall at 6:45 a.m.
The First Presbyterian Easter Egg hunt and brunch will be held during the Sunday School hour and will begin with a brunch followed by the egg hunt for the young and young-at-heart..
The Resurrection Service will be at the normal time of 10:50 a.m. on Easter Sunday and will include Communion and the baptism of Oliver Paul Streit.
Palm Sunday mass will be held at 11:15 a.m., Sunday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Holy Thursday mass will be at 7:30 a.m. Good Friday Stations of the Cross will be at 2 p.m., in Spanish and at 3 pm., in English. Good Friday mass is at 7:30 p.m. Holy Saturday mass will be at 8:30 p.m. Easter Sunday mass will be at 11:30 a.m.
Maundy Thursday services with Communion are set for 7 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. A Good Friday service will be held at 7 p.m. Easter service will be at 8 a.m., followed by breakfast at 8:45 a.m. The Easter service with Communion will be at 10:30 a.m. An Easter egg hunt for Sunday School youth will be held after church.
First Baptist Church will present “The Third Day” during the Easter weekend with a pageant to be presented at 7 p.m., April 20 and 21.
In addition to churches, other organizations and groups are planning activities for the week. Main Street Vernon will present an Egg-stra special Egg Hunt for children from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, April 19. Businesses will have eggs hiding throughout downtown with some prize eggs among them. Some businesses will have characters that children can have a photo with.
New Visions is having an Easter Style show on Saturday April 20, beginning at 6 p.m. for ages from 6 months to adult for both male and female. Refreshments and drawings for Easter baskets will be held.
Other churches and organizations may also be planning Holy Week activities. Readers may wish to check with their individual churches and groups for additional activities.
