Burglary, high speed chase ends in prison sentence

Jacob Daniel Smith, 28, of Dallas, was sentenced to five years in prison following his plea of guilty in the 46th Judicial District Court to unlawful possession of a firearm and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.

On March 24, 2020, the Wilbarger County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle burglary on Highway 240 in rural Wilbarger County.

The victim saw the suspect flee in a Dodge pickup with no license plate tags. A Wilbarger County deputy spotted the vehicle on US Hwy 287 and a chase ensued that reached speeds up to 105 miles per hour.

The vehicle eventually stopped in Oklaunion and Smith was taken into custody A rifle was located inside the pickup.

Smith is prohibited from possessing a firearm in the State of Texas because of a 2015 conviction for robbery in Dallas County.

He was represented by Sage Seal. The case was prosecuted by the 46th Judicial District Attorney’s office. District Judge Dan Mike Bird presided and assessed the sentence.
