Prefix required on 940 calls

Prefix required on 940 calls

Residents in the 940 area code will be required to dial 10 digits when making a local phone call.

People with seven Texas area codes will be required to dial 10 digits (the area code and the telephone number) for all local calls starting Oct. 25.

According to the Public Utility Commission of Texas, those with phone numbers in the 915, 254, 361, 409, 806, 830 and 940 area codes will need to dial 10 digits.

The change is due to the Federal Communications Commission making 988 the abbreviated dialing tone for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

The affected area codes include 988 prefixes. Phone numbers will not change.
