Rome Curtis “R.C.” Harris
Rome Curtis “R.C.” Harris passed away on
Feb. 26, 2023.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March
1, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Central Christian Church
with Rev. Jim Antwine officiating. Burial was
held at Wilbarger Memorial Park under the
direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
R. C. was born on Jan. 8, 1933 in Etter, Texas.
His family later moved to Vernon where he
graduated from Vernon High in 1950. He
lettered in football, basketball and track. Among
his many athletic accomplishments was leading
the Lions to the 1949-50 State Championship
basketball game.
R. C. attended Texas Christian University.
While there he played football for the Horned
Frogs and was a member of the Southwest
Conference Champions who played Kentucky in
the 1952 Cotton Bowl. After graduation RC
chose to serve his country as a Lieutenant in the
U.S. Air Force stationed at Patrick Air Force
Base in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
R.C. married his high school sweetheart Kathryn Hill on Jan. 28, 1953. They
were married 69 years and had three sons. John (and wife Jan) of Lubbock,
David (and wife Debbie) of Dobbs Ferry, New York, and Dr. Pat Harris of
Dallas. He had six grandchildren. Hunter (and wife Ashley) and Keaton Harris
of Lubbock. Bolton Harris (and husband Blaz Korosec) of Dallas. Isla and
Giana Harris of Dobbs Ferry, New York. He also had two great grandsons
Parker and Bennett Harris of Lubbock.
R.C. was a past President of the Vernon Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce,
Wilbarger United Way, Carnegie City-County Library, and on the board of the
Little League Organization. He was also a player-coach for the Chillicothe
Vikings. A semi-pro football team that won the 1963 State of Texas
Championship. He also enjoyed golf and had two holes-in-one during his
playing days.
He was preceded in death by his parents Florence and Curtis Esten Harris and
sister Betty Mason.
R.C. retired as an area manager for West Texas Utilities in 1995. He was a
member of Central Christian Church of Vernon.
Visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sullivan
Funeral Home.
