Honoring Lady Lions 1985 state title team
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Vernon Lady Lions capturing the Class 3A State Basketball Championship and Vernon ISD will be honoring members of that 1985 state title team on Friday, Jan 10.
A reception for the team will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the VHS Band Hall. The public is invited to attend the reception. That night, Vernon is hosting Iowa Park in District 7-3A basketball action, and between the girls’ varsity game and the boys’ varsity game, a ceremony will be held to recognize the state championship team.
The 1984-85 school year was the first for Vernon to be in Class 3A, and the Lady Lions’ state crown was the first team state championship in VHS history. The Lady Lions, No. 2-ranked team in the state, went 33-2 that season and used a furious second-half rally to defeat No. 1-ranked Sweeny in the Class 3A state championship game, 52-51.
