Texas House bill would rename stretch of 287 after 9-year-old crash victim
A Texas House bill seeks to rename a portion of U.S. 287 as the Molly Mullins Memorial Highway. The measure was introduced by Rep. Morgan Meyer, of the 108th District representing downtown Dallas.
Molly Mullens, age 9 of Highland Park, was killed in a head-on collision in Oklaunion on March 16, 2024, as her family was returning from a Spring Break ski trip in Colorado. Than Than Shwe, 43 of Vernon, was also killed in the three-car accident. Shwe’s 2014 Honda Odyssey hydroplaned on the 287 curve in Oklaunion, crossed the median, went through the railing and hit the 2021 GMC Yukon that Mullen was a passenger in, head-on. Another vehicle, a 2023 Honda Pilot, then hit the other two vehicles. Molly’s parents Michael and Marissa Mullens and brothers Connor, 15, and Sean, 13 were seriously injured, as was Shwe’s 14-year-old daughter and the two occupants of the Honda.
H.B. No. 2457, filed last Wednesday, would pertain to the portion of U.S. Highway 287 in Wilbarger County between its intersection with County Road 111 and County Road 132 East to be designated as the Molly Mullens Memorial Highway.
The measure, if approved, would direct TxDOT to “design and construct markers indicating the designation as the Molly Mullens Memorial Highway and any other appropriate information; and erect a marker at each end of the highway and at appropriate intermediate sites along the highway.”
