Rabies Alert Issued in Vernon Following Positive Case
The Vernon Police Department and Wilbarger Humane Society confirmed April 8 in a social media post the first rabies case of the year in the area. It was reported a skunk within the Vernon city limits tested positive for the virus, prompting this public health alert.
Rabies is a deadly disease, with a 100% fatality rate once symptoms appear. However, it is entirely preventable with proper precautions. Authorities are urging residents to take immediate steps to protect their families and pets.
Key Safety Measures:
- Vaccinate Pets: Ensure dogs, cats, and other pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
- Avoid Wild Animals: Refrain from contact with wild or stray animals.
- Educate Children: Teach children to avoid touching unfamiliar animals.
- Immediate Care for Bites: Wash any animal bites or scratches with soap and water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention promptly.
