Margaret Elizabeth Colley
Margaret Elizabeth Colley died peacefully in her home on Feb. 28, 2015. She was 89.
Beth was born in Seymour, Tex., on Oct. 25, 1925, to the late Alma and Robert E. Baskin. After her graduation from Seymour High School, she attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in English. She moved to Vernon in 1946 to teach English at Vernon High School. On July 1, 1949, she married Hubbard “Hub” Colley, Jr.
Beth was an active member of her community, serving on the Red River Valley Museum board, the Community Concert Board and the Council of the Arts. She was a member of the Yamparika Club, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a volunteer for Vernon State Hospital. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Vernon and a former Sunday school teacher. Her chief interest, joy and pride in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, parent, grandparent and great-grandparent.
Beth is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her two brothers. She is survived by two daughters, Claudia Nolen, of San Antonio, and Courtenay Stebbins and her husband Randy, of Dallas; four grandchildren, Elise Bridges and her husband Rob, of Austin, Courtenay Fowler and her husband, Chet, of Dallas, Ryan Taylor, of Dallas, and Ann Elise Taylor, of Elkhart, Ind.; six great-grandchildren, Robert, Blake and Avery Bridges, and Ford, Hayes and Brooks Fowler; and step-grandchildren Laine and Cooper Stebbins.
A memorial service celebrating Beth’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, at First United Methodist Church of Vernon, 3029 Wilbarger St., Vernon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Red River Valley Museum, Vernon College, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association.
