Shirley Good Phelps, age 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Mineral Wells on May 9, 2016, surrounded by her family. Shirley’s strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family and friends carried her through the last few weeks.
Shirley Corrine Good was born on June 18, 1931 in Perryton, TX to Lawrence and Bertha Good. She was one of eight children. After graduating from Perryton High School, she met the love of her life, Sammy Lee Phelps, at a dance in Canadian, TX, and married on Oct. 14, 1949. Married for 66 years, Sam and Shirley raised their two children, Kenda and Brent, over the years in Perryton, Dalhart and Vernon, Texas.
Her love for her family, and her love of life presented itself in many ways. With a true giving heart, Shirley faithfully cared for family and friends through her delicious cooking and baking from scratch, including her famous family dinner rolls and her many desserts. With a real zest for life, Shirley loved to attend her Church, play bridge, chat with friends and family, and travel to Colorado and the Texas Valley. However, Shirley’s most precious gift was the time she spent with her beloved granddaughters (“her girls”) and great-grandchildren, who most lovingly called her Mimi. She didn’t miss the birth or birthday celebration of any of her six great-grandchildren. It wasn’t unusual for her to have a book of photos of them everywhere she went. A woman of faith and the heart of the Phelps’s family, Shirley shaped their lives by her tireless Christian example and touched each and every one by her precious and steadfast love.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, Sam; son, Brent (Debra) Phelps of Aubrey, TX and daughter Kenda (Jim) Hill of Mineral Wells, TX; granddaughters Tera (Justin) Castro of Austin, TX, Tracy (Daniel) Walls of Dallas, TX, Kelsey Arsenault of Mineral Wells, TX, Katie Carson (Kekoa) of Maui, HI; grandson Chris Carson of Plano, TX; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Tatum, and Josie Castro of Austin, TX, Hatton, Rylan, and Nora Walls of Dallas, TX, and Isabelle, Everly and Keegan Spencer of Maui, HI. She is also survived by her two sisters, Genell Galloway of Dumas, TX, Deanna (Larry) Baker of Pampa, TX; her brother Gene (Martha) Good of Austin, TX and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Bertha Good; brothers Allen, Skeet, and Gale Good; sister Beverly Good; and son-in-law Peter Arsenault.
