Genevieve was born Jan. 21, 1936 in Wichita Falls, Texas and was adopted at the age of four days by Willis Blair and Dorothy Genevieve (Heath) Smith of Vernon. Her paternal grandparents were early Wilbarger County settlers Charlie S. and Rosa Ella (Parks) Smith of the Fargo Community. Maternal grandparents Nathan R. and Sarah Genevieve (Cannedy) Heath owned and operated a jewelry store on the Vernon town square. The Smith family moved around the Texas panhandle working for Bell Gas. She was introduced to Winburn Lee Smith, who was working for her uncle, Leslie Smith, when she was a young teenager in Shamrock. She told her friend at that time “that is the man I’m going to marry.”

Genevieve married Winburn on Valentine’s Day 1954 in Clarendon, Texas and they settled in the Doans community where they farmed and raised cattle. She was a member of the Fargo Baptist Church and later the First Baptist Church of Vernon where she taught Youth Sunday School. She was very creative and sewed, painted, and canned much of the family’s food.
