Lady Lions win district opener, 1-0 in pitching duel
The Vernon Lady Lions (10-3-1, 1-0) opened 6-4A District play a few days later than planned, but they came away with a hard fought 1-0 win over the Burkburnett Lady Bulldogs (12-6, 0-1) on Friday night.
Vernon pitcher Shay Williams struck out 12 and allowed just two hits and two walks in the complete game shutout.
The Lady Lions got the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth when Jaila McBride led off with a double. She scored on an RBI single from Carli White.
The Lady Lions had opened the bottom of the first with a lead-off double from Williams, but she was stranded at third as Burkburnett pitcher Jocelyn Bright had a strong outing, also recording 12 strikeouts.
Addison Spencer, Caitlin Brints, White and McBride each went 1 for 2 at the plate with Williams going 1 for 3.
Friday’s game had been postponed from Tuesday, due to weather.
The Lady Lions will be back in action at home on Tuesday for a district game against Hirschi. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
