Victim ID’d in officer-involved shooting at Quanah

QUANAH – The identity of a man killed in an officer-involved shooting here on Saturday, March 9 was released by authorities on Wednesday.
The man was identified as 59-year-old Tommy Wayne Welch. The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. that morning when a deputy of the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department responded to an incident involving a man with a knife at 305 West 9th. Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Dan Buesing confirmed that 10 minutes after responding to the scene, the deputy notified Quanah/Hardeman County dispatch that shots were fired and to send an ambulance. Welch was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hardeman County Sheriff Pat Laugherty then requested that Texas Rangers lead an investigation of the incident.
Buesing reported that the deputy, who has not been identified, was not injured in the incident and has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.
The incident was still being investigated by Texas Rangers last week.
