Local school numbers look similar for realignment

Local schools have announced their enrollment numbers submitted to the Texas University Interscholastic League.

The school enrollment numbers have extra significance because the University Interscholastic League will factor that number into its district realignment process in early 2020.

Vernon reported 572, VISD reported 602 last year. Northside reported 59. It was 61 two years ago. Harrold reported 31, up from 25 two years ago. Chillicothe reported 59 this year. It was 69 two years ago.

Based on the enrollment snapshot, UIL groups schools into classifications that range from the 1A, the smallest number of students, to 6A, the largest. Schools within each classification then are divided into smaller districts for academic, athletic and fine arts competitions.

UIL will announce the cutoff enrollment numbers for each classification in December. Every two years, UIL realigns districts.

New districts will be named in February.

At the last realignment divisions for football and basketball included 4A DII – 505-789; 2A DII – 105-161.4; 1A DI – 55.5-104.9; 1A DII – 55.4 or less.
