Lt. Col. Robert V. Hanaway
USAF retired Lt. Col. Robert V. Hanaway went be with
his heavenly Father on May 22, 2020. He fought a long,
courageous battle with COPD. He was preceded in death
by the love of his life, his wife, Betty Belew Hanaway.
He was born April 1 3, 1 922 in Meadville, Pennsylvania
to Victor and Katherine Hanaway. He had two brothers,
James Hanaway and David Hanaway, both now deceased.
Lt. Col. Hanaway is survived by one stepson, USA
retired CW4 Tandy Whitehead and his wife Teresa. He is
also survived by two step grandsons, Christopher Todd
Whitehead and his three children Savannah, Carson, and
Isabelle all of Davis, California as well as USAF Lt. Col.
Robert Whitehead, wife Kristin and their three children,
Karly, Taft, and Hayes of Alexandria, Virginia. He also
leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
While on active duty, Lt. Col. Hanaway flew the B-1 7
in WWII, the B29 in the Korean conflict, and the B-47
Stratojet and the B-52 Bomber as part of SAC (Strategic
Air Command). He was a decorated military veteran.
Flying was his passion. We will always cherish our
memories of his amazing sense of humor, his love and
devotion to family and friends, as well as his service and
dedication to our country. We will miss you Gramp. We
know you are holding Gran’s hand once again. Rest well.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday,
June 2 at the First United Methodist Church in Vernon.
