Mary Elizabeth “Bobbie” Major Hopkins
Mary Elizabeth “Bobbie” Major Hopkins died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020 in Vernon, Texas. She was born on May 13, 1920 near the Red River on the Major family farm north of Chillicothe, Texas. She celebrated her 100th birthday this year. A family graveside service was held at the Chillicothe Memorial Cemetery on Monday, Dec. 14.She was the daughter of Roy Major and Edith Hayhurst Major. She lived her entire life in Chillicothe until recently when she moved to Vernon. She married James H. Hopkins on Aug. 9, 1940. Her remarkable life included retiring from Stein Hall in Vernon, rearing four children, and caring for grandchildren and great grandchildren who were her greatest joy. She was a talented musician, and played the piano and organ at the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe for decades. Bobbie is survived by her sister Joan Clawson of Quanah, son Ray Hopkins and wife Susan of Chillicothe, daughter-in-law Cynie Hopkins of Chillicothe, daughter Diane Finley and husband Terry of Lancaster, Texas, and daughter Linda McElrath of Austin, Texas. Her grandchildren are D’Aun Pakulak and husband Mark, Leah Bradley, Christy Tabor and husband Horace Joe Tabor, Alissa Hopkins, David Hopkins and wife Wendy, Mark McElrath, John Finley and husband Ron Baker, and Andrew Finley. She had 11 great- grandchildren and fi ve great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, sisters Frankie Stanford and Virginia Hill, brother Billy Major, and her son Leland Hopkins on Feb. 22, 2018.Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 367, of Chillicothe, TX, 79225.
