Tennis claims district titles

The Vernon Lions  won four of the five district titles up for grabs last week, and advanced the four champions as well as  four runners-up to the next round of Region tennis competition. Vernon also won both the boys and girls District team titles.

District play began Wednesday in Vernon, but rain forced a delay, with action resuming Thursday in Burkburnett, before finishing Friday afternoon in Vernon.

In mixed doubles, Vernon’s BT White and Addison Spencer were pushed to three sets by teammates Alex Ramirez and Kinsey Weatherly before prevailing 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

White /Spencer topped Graham’s Youngblood/Whitaker 6-0, 6-0, and Iowa Parks’ Mahler/Fields 6-1,6-0 to reach Friday’s championship round.

Weatherly/Ramirez reached the finals with a 6-0,6-0 win over Iowa Park, and a 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 win over Reynolds-James of Hirschi.

Emili Oznick/Audi Goodman won girls doubles over teammates Madison Varela and Caroline Ruhl in the finals 6-1, 6-4. Oznick/Goodman had a first round bye and defeated Burkburnett’s How-Wade 6-3, 6-1 to reach the finals.

Varela/Ruhl defeated Graham’s Partida-Duran 6-0, 6-0 and Burkburnett’s Ruiz/Goodman 6-2, 6-2 to reach the finals.

Vernon’s Kell Castleberry and Andrick Avita won boys doubles Friday 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 over Burkburnett’s Kahn-Brock. The Vernon duo defeated Hirschi’s Sharar/Flickinger 6-0, 6-0 and Iowa Park’s Lindstrom/Miser 6-0, 6-0 to reach the finals. The Vernon duo of Ramirez-Rejino took 3rd.

Max Jones won Boys Singles, defeating teammate Dane Kieschnick in the finals 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

Jones defeated Graham’s Davie Price 6-0, 6-1, Burkburnett’s Armando Moreno 6-0, 6-4 to reach the finals. Kieschnick beat Burkburnett’s Logan Carter 6-0, 6-0, and Iowa Park’s Grayson Martin 6-0, 6-0 to reach the finals. And he beat Moreno in a playback for second.

Vernon’s Presleigh Smith finished as runner-up in Girls Singles, falling to Hirschi’s  Savana Mayfield  6-1, 6-2.

Smith defeated Mineral Wells’ Emily Myrick 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 and Iowa Parks’ Jenna Bounds 6-2, 6-3 to reach the finals.
