Vernon 21, Hirschi 0 (5)
The Vernon Lions broke open a close game with 13 runs in the second inning to steamroll Hirschi 21-0 in the District 5-4A opener for both teams.
Lavery Gonzales got the win on the mound with a five-inning no-hitter as he struck out 13, and surrendered just three walks, with two of those in the first inning. The Lions got out of the two-on jam with Gonzales registering two strikeouts and then catcher Garrett Pierce ended the Huskies inning chance by picking off the runner at first. Gonzales dominated from there — striking out the side in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
The Lions lead-off in the bottom of the first, Ayden Smith, took a walk after falling behind 0-2 on the count. He stole second and raced to third on an error from the catcher. Smith scored on a wild pitch, and it was 1-0 after one inning.
The Lions blew the game open in the bottom of the second, sending 17 batters to the plate and scoring 13 runs. The Lions added a touchdown in the third inning for the 21-0 final.
Cooper Quillin knocked out 4 RBIs for the Lions, Kasen Holley had 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs. Austen Fleming had 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
