Rodriguez, Martinez earn silver at South Plains meet

The Vernon Lions wrestling team took sixth place overall, out of 13 squads competing last weekend at the South Plains Invitational in Lubbock.
Vernon had two second place winners, and a third place finisher in the tough event, that featured 4A and 5A squads.
Vernon’s Shyne Rodriguez earned silver at 215 pounds, scoring 22 team points. He won the quarterfinal and semifinal by falls.
Jaden Martinez claimed second at 126 pounds, and he earned 21.5 team points.
Christian Martinez was third at 175 pounds, and earned 22 team points, going 5-1 on the day. After falling in the quarterfinal, he swept four matches for third overall.
Other Vernon placers included Eh Kpah, fourth at 113 and earning 14 team points; Johnny Pruitt fifth at 157 after going 4-2 and earning 14 team points; and Merrick Byers, 6th overall at 106 and earning 7 team points.
Vernon hosts the Red River Classic on January 19 and 20.
