Vernon tennis claims District 6-4A title

The Vernon Lions tennis team defeated Burkburnett 14-5 to capture the District 6-4A title, going undefeated in district, and avenging a loss to Burkburnett in last season’s title game. In UIL team tennis, Vernon plays up a classification in 4A.
In doubles action, Vernon won 2 of 3 in boys doubles, swept girls and mixed doubles for a 6-1 lead heading into singles.
The Lions got boys doubles wins from Will Castleberry/Atticus Mixon at No. 2 by a 4-6, 6-4(4) score and Ryne Sanders/Truett Schur at No. 3 with a 9-6,6-1 win. The girls doubles swept with Mayo/Saylor winning 6-0, 7-6; Alyssa Andara/Kaitlyn Beam winning 6-0, 6-1; and Mariana Ortega/ Emily Rodriguez winning 6-3, 6-4. The mixed doubles duo of Jonathan Medina/Lily Beam won their match 6-1, 6-2.
In singles action, the girls claimed four of six matches. Vernon took victories by Kaitlyn Beam, Alyssa Andara, Mariana Ortega, and Lily Beam.
The boys also took four of six matches in singles play. Jonathan Medina, Hunter Boatman, Will Castleberry, and Truett Schur claiming wins on the courts.
It was also Senior Recognition for senior tennis players. Senior members of the team, along with their parents, were recognized before action began in the match. Seniors on the Lions tennis squad include Alyssa Andara, Kaitlyn Beam, Addie DeLaune, Mason Ford, Harley Fulford, Atticus Mixson, Emily Rodriguez, Ryne Sanders and Courtney Saylor.
The Lions entered the Class 4A Team Tennis playoffs as the No. 1 team from District 6-4A faced Hereford, the No. 4 seed from District 5-4A in the bi-district round of the playoffs Tuesday in Plainview.
