City Approves $170,000 Purchase of New Truck
During the March meeting of the City of Vernon Commission, commissioners approved the purchase of a new septic pumping truck for the wastewater treatment plant as part of the 2025-2026 city budget. The decision was made after extensive discussions about the current state of the existing truck and the options available for replacement.
The city’s current septic truck, which has been in service since the 1990s, has undergone significant wear and tear over the years. It has already been fitted with two replacement tanks, and its springs, clamps, and pump are deteriorating. City officials expressed concerns about the truck’s reliability and the challenges of maintaining it, given its age and the harsh conditions it operates in.
Three options for replacement trucks were presented during the meeting. The first option, a 2025 Mack MD7 model located in Florida, was priced at $166,000 with an additional $4,000 for shipping. The second and third options were 2027 models, priced at $168,668 and $177,000, respectively. However, the 2025 Mack MD7 was favored due to its tilt bed feature, which allows for easier cleaning and maintenance of the tank.
City officials emphasized the importance of the new truck in preventing sewer backups and maintaining the wastewater system. The current truck is used to pump out clogged sewers and manholes, ensuring smooth operations and minimizing inconvenience for residents.
While some commissioners debated the possibility of rebuilding the existing truck, it was ultimately deemed not cost-effective. The council approved the purchase of the 2025 Mack MD7 model, citing its zero mileage, aluminum tank, and advanced pump system as key advantages.
