Veterans’ Day activities planned
The American Legion and Vernon Kiwanis Club will host a Veterans’ Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, at the American Legion.
The VFW Post 4747 will hold a flag raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, followed by lunch at 12 noon for veterans at the Post home.
In addition, the World War I Centennial Commission has organized the The Bells of Peace program, which asks individuals, private and religious organizations, and governments agencies at all levels to toll bells at 11:00 a.m. local time November 11 in remembrance of those who served and sacrificed to honor the 4.7 million Americans who served in uniform in World War I, and the 116,516 who gave their lives in service. Bells are to ring 21 times with a five second delay between each ring.
The bells will begin sounding at the U.S. Capitol, and will continue across the country, and includes all U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine ships. The Commission is also offering an app for those who want to sound a bell on their smart phone. It can be found at ww1cc.org/app
