Burglar sentenced to prison

A Vernon man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for burglary of a habitation during proceedings of the 46th Judicial District Court in Vernon on Monday.
Donnell Deshawn Thomas, 41, of Vernon, pleaded guilty to burglarizing a local residence on July 31, 2017. On that date, the homeowner reported to police that she had been burglarized and that around $150 in loose change had been stolen.
The victim had video footage from the residence that contained partial images of the suspect. Vernon police officers believed that the subject on the video was Thomas. Police then obtained video footage from Wal-Mart showing Thomas using a coin machine to convert a large amount of change into cash. When confronted with the evidence against him, Thomas confessed to the burglary.
He was represented by Sage Seal of Childress. District Attorney Staley Heatly prosecuted the case while District Judge Dan Mike Bird presided over the hearing and assessed the sentence.
