Police enforcing handicap spots, fire lanes
The Vernon Police Department is advising residents to obey the law on handicap parking spaces and fire lanes.
“We are beefing up enforcement,” Chief Randy Agan said. “If you do not have a handicap sticker you will receive a ticket.”
Police Captain Wayne Hodges said several citations have already been issued and the fines are steep. He said the new emphasis is in response to complaints.
In addition, Chief Agan said fire lanes are for emergencies only and no one should be stopping there. The problem is particularly acute at Walmart. Several warnings were issued to drivers on Friday.
Chief Agan also said that another area of emphasis is seatbelts. Complaints of student driving without seatbelts have been received in recent days.
“Wear your seatbelt,” Agan said. “It’s the law.”
