Sawin and Amechi named top students at Northside
Northside High School has named Bryant Sawin as valedictorian and Chiamaka Lilly Amechi as salutatorian of the 2019 graduating class.
Commencement exercises for the 19-member graduating class are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 24 in the school gym.
Sawin, the son of Lynn and Brice Sawin, was named valedictorian on a 98.515 GPA.
He has attended Northside ISD since the sixth grade and the first generation of his family for the district.
His activities and sports in high school include Texas High School Rodeo, football, track, baseball, FFA, 4-H, student council and National Honor Society. His achievements and awards through high school include being named to Who’s Who in English I, II, and III, IPC, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and U.S. History as well as First Team All-District Tight End, Utility Back, and Defensive End. He is also a three-time Texas High School Rodeo State Qualifier.
Following graduation, Sawin plans to attend West Texas A&M University and study wildlife biology so that he can become a wildlife biologist.
Amechi. daughter of Dr. Ada Amechi-Obigwe and Amechi Obigwe, was named salutatorian on a 97.953 GPA.
She has attended Northside ISD since the sixth grade and is the first generation to attend school in the district.
During high school, Amechi participated in cheer, track, basketball, FCCLA, FFA, UIL, National Honor Society, and gifted and talented program.
Amechi served on the school’s cheerleading squad for four years and was named an All-American cheerleader 2016-2018. As an All-American, Lilly had the opportunity to represent her squad in London during the New Year’s Day Parade. She was also a regional qualifier in track her freshman and senior year, and served as FCCLA’s secretary for 2016-2017 and president from 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. In UIL, she was a regional qualifier all four years of high school in events such as spelling, current events, and ready writing.
Amechi served as student council and National Honor Society secretary in her junior year. In her senior year, she was nominated the treasurer of Student Council.
Throughout high school, Amechi was an A Honor Roll student and named to Who’s Who in IPC, Graphic Design, Biology, Fashion Design, and Algebra II.
After graduation, Amechi plans to attend the University of Oklahoma. She will pursue a degree in political science and be a part of the honors program.
