Filing period begins for local offices

The City of Vernon is now accepting applications for candidates interested in running for any of three spots on the Vernon City Commission. The election will be Saturday, May 1.

The filing period is from January 13 to Feb. 12. Packets can be picked up from City Secretary Jo Stone at City Hall.

Place 1 is an open seat, vacated by Justin Marsh, who resigned due to moving outside the city limits. The open seat is just a one-year term. Only candidates on the west side of town can file for the seat (See map below).

Places 3 and 4, currently held by Don Aydelott and Britt Ferguson are also up for election. These are 2-year seats. One of the seats represents the west side of town, and the other the east side of town.

Other elections with open filing periods include Wilbarger General Hospital, with seats currently held by Melanie Milner and Jim Riggins up for election and the Vernon ISD,Place 1 and Place 2, held by Mike Boyd and Emory Byers up for election.

The Vernon College board of trustees were meeting Wednesday to possibly hold a special election to replace a trustee, who was resigning from the board.
