Matthew (Matt) George Blackerby Jr.

Matthew (Matt) George Blackerby Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 13,2021. He was born December 30, 1932 in Decatur, Texas, but lived most of his life in Vernon,Texas. He was 88 years old.He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew George Blackerby Sr., mother Beatrice Caraway Blackerby, his brother, John Balckerby. He came to live with his (foster) Mom in Oct. 2001.He is survived by his foster family,Margueritte Gray, whom he called Mama Gray of Vernon, His adopted brothers, Joe Bob Gray, of Vernon, Terry and wife Karen of Goree, Texas, Jay Jay Gray and wife Karla of Jacksonville, Florida; His sisters; Stacia Boone of Vernon and Angela Routon of Lawton, Okla., and nieces and nephews. Matt loved his Church families and special needs friends. He loved going to Camp Butman in Merkel, Texas to a special needs Camp called New Dawn every summer as long as he was able. Matt attended the Sheltered workshop in Vernon and Quanah. He loved going to church and was a member of the Agape Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church where Margueritte was the teacher. Matt loved to sit on the front porch and sing gospel song and Christmas songs, no matter what the season and if he forgot some words, he would just make them up. Matt attended the First United Methodist Church in Vernon and also Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon and going to Happy Huggers at Faith Methodist Church. He loved to watch Vernon Rodeo Parades. He loved people although he might not remember your name, he would remember you. And often gave his friends and family nicknames such as: whatever car you drove he would call you like Miss Chevy or Miss Ford. Or he would try to buy your car for 5 bucks. He could always know cars. He was very active in the Special Olympics Program as well as an athlete for the Special Olympics. He will be missed by all who loved him.Services will be Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 1:00 pm at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Jackson offi ciating. Interment will be held at Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.Visitation will be Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Sullivan Funeral HomeMemorials can be made to the Special Olympics.Online condolences may be made to the family at www.sullivanfuneralhomevernon.comMatthew
