Mejia sentenced for evading arrest

Jose Guadalupe Mejia, 22, of Vernon, was sentenced to six years in prison following his plea of guilty to evading arrest with a motor vehicle. The sentence was handed down by District Judge Dan Mike Bird during recent proceedings of the 46th Judicial District Court in Vernon.
On January 3, 2021, a Vernon police officer noticed a vehicle driving recklessly in the parking lot at Orbison Park. When the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, Mejia began evading arrest.
He fled through town while running through stop signs at a high rate of speed. Mejia fled out of the city limits and into Wilbarger County. The chase came to a conclusion wen Mejia lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the ditch on CR 128. Mejia told officers that he ran because he had been drinking and didn’t want his car to be towed.

Mejia was represented by Earl Griffin of Childress.
