Vernon ISD athletics getting summer overhaul
A growing pile of concrete on the east side of the Vernon High School football field is the most visible indication of major summer renovations underway within the Vernon ISD athletic program.
The concrete debris is the old stadium bleachers, which are being replaced with new aluminum stadium seating.
Coach Kevin Sherrill says the new seating is on schedule to be in place before the football season starts next month.
The VISD trustees were concerned with the deteriorating concrete bleachers, which necessitated shutting down part of the stadium last year. During April’s business meeting they took action.
“It’s gotten to the point where we are concerned about student and spectator safety,” former superintendent Jeff Byrd told the trustees. “We don’t want to get where Burkburnett got, and not be able to host games.”
