Herring Bank honored for 125 years — Herring Bank Day celebrated in Vernon

The Herring Bank celebrated its 125th anniversary Feb. 14 in Vernon.

Prior to the proclamation being read, Kathy Craighead, director of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce spoke of the contributions and importance to the city the Herring Bank has been through the years.
A brief history of the bank was highlighted by the mayor prior to the reading of the proclamation, followed by the mayor expressing the city’s gratitude for the contributions that the Herring Bank had made over the years to the progress of the City of Vernon.
A ribbon cutting ceremony followed the reading of the proclamation by the Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
The bank was founded in Vernon in 1899 by Colonel Cornelius T. Herring as the C.T. Herring Banking Company. It later became known as the Herring National Bank and was chartered by the United States Department of the Treasury in 1903. In 2005 the bank was renamed Herring Bank.
Following are major historical events for Herring Bank:
–October 1, 1997, acquired First Bank & Trust of Clarendon.
–Dec. 31, 1997, acquired BFNB Trust Company, National Association in Amarillo.
–May 2, 2005, moved bank headquarters from Vernon to Amarillo
–March 20, 2009, acquired Colorado National Bank in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as part of a government assisted transaction.
–July 31, 2009, acquired First State Bank of Altus in Altus, Oklahoma as part of a government assisted transaction
Today Herring Bank has branches in Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado. Branch locations include:

–Amarillo, three branches
– Azle
–Grand Prairie
–Vernon, two branches

–Altus, two branches

–Colorado Springs

In addition to their bank branches, Herring Bank has a total of 26 college/university campus locations in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas; and employer locations at Swift & Co in Cactus, Cargill Meat Company in Friona, and Pilgrim’s Pride in Lufkin.
