Mass Casualty Traffic Collision
UPDATE: DPS Sgt. Juan Gutierrez issued a statement at 8:55 p.m., March 16, stating that there were two confirmed fatalities from the wreck on U.S. 287 near Oklaunion on that date. Names of the deceased have not yet been released.
First responders were called to a mass casualty traffic incident between approximately 6-6:30 p.m. March 16 on U.S. 287 near Oklaunion. Two of the vehicles involved appeared to have collided head-on, with one vehicle overturning onto its roof in the center median of the highway. This vehicle was completely consumed by fire. The second vehicle remained on its wheels with its front end pushed back to the firewall. The first firefighters/EMS personnel arriving from the Vernon Fire Department called for all hands to respond for 5-6 patients. Two of the patients transported from the scene to Wilbarger General Hospital were in full arrest according to radio traffic. There was at least one fatality at the scene. Other
responding agencies included the Wilbarger County Sheriff’s Office, Vernon Police Department, Department of Public Safety, who will lead the investigation into the collision, and the Electra Fire Department, as well as other agencies brought in to assist.

First, thoughts and prayers to the families involved in this accident and to the first responders who had to work the scene.
We were able to see a short glimpse of the horrific accident as we drove through around 10 pm heading southbound and knew it was not going to be a favorable outcome. TxDOT had multiple work crew vehicles stationed upstream of the accident in the southbound lanes with lights flashing to slow oncoming traffic and directed all traffic off the highway at FM 433; they included a flagman with light wands to wave traffic across FM 433 and back onto Hwy. 287 downstream of the accident. TxDOT’s traffic control was very efficient.
Is there an update on this story. We came upon this accident on Sat and wanted to know how that rest of the victims were.
Also it did not look like a head on wreck.
thanks
