Mass Casualty Traffic Collision

UPDATE: DPS Sgt. Juan Gutierrez issued a statement at 8:55 p.m., March 16, stating that there were two confirmed fatalities from the wreck on U.S. 287 near Oklaunion on that date. Names of the deceased have not yet been released.

First responders were called to a mass casualty traffic incident between approximately 6-6:30 p.m. March 16 on U.S. 287 near Oklaunion.  Two of the vehicles involved appeared to have collided head-on, with one vehicle overturning onto its roof in the center median of the highway. This vehicle was completely consumed by fire. The second vehicle remained on its wheels with its front end pushed back to the firewall. The first firefighters/EMS personnel arriving from the Vernon Fire Department called for all hands to respond for 5-6 patients. Two of the patients transported from the scene to Wilbarger General Hospital were in full arrest according to radio traffic. There was at least one fatality at the scene. Other responding agencies included the Wilbarger County Sheriff’s Office, Vernon Police Department, Department of Public Safety, who will lead the investigation into the collision, and the Electra Fire Department, as well as other agencies brought in to assist.
