Vernon College trustees discuss possibility of adding new sport
Vernon College leaders discussed adding a new sport as part of the April 10 trustee meeting.
The Vernon College board of Trustees called on Athletic Director Jason Jenkins to share information about the possibility of the college introducing a new sport. Jenkins explained that Vernon College is average for the number of sports compared to other NJCAA Region 5 colleges.
A significant concern about adding a new sport is housing availability on campus. In recent years, on-campus housing has been at capacity in the fall semester. “If we added as few as another 12 students, we simply wouldn’t have space for them at this current time,” Jenkins explained to the board. However, Jenkins believes the college would have room to add more student-athletes in the spring semester.
Jenkins recommended that the board of trustees make a plan to address the current on-campus housing aesthetics. Board member Meg Heatly agreed, “If we want the student population to grow, taking them there [the dorms] may not be our best selling point”
The board agreed to discuss dorm room updates further, stating that they already have a few plans on the books.
The board will meet again on May 8.
