Transfer Station Hours Extended on Saturdays
The City of Vernon will test extended Saturday hours at its transfer station to better accommodate residents, city officials said.
During a recent council meeting, staff proposed a trial period to expand Saturday operations from 9 a.m.–noon to 8 a.m.–2 p.m., running from June 6 through Oct. 31. The trial aims to assess whether longer hours increase accessibility and improve overall service for citizens.
The extended hours would require additional staffing, with two employees covering a total of 14 hours on Saturdays, increasing weekly payroll costs by approximately $395. Over a full year, the added labor could total more than $20,500 in overtime. City officials said the trial would allow them to evaluate whether the expense is justified.
“The change is being considered because residents have expressed difficulty using the transfer station during the current hours,” said a city representative. “We want to see if extending Saturdays provides more convenience without undue cost.”
Council members discussed alternatives, including seasonal adjustments and staggered shifts, before approving the trial. Officials will track usage, monitor staffing, and report back with recommendations in November.
